Home Service Other Ranks Helmet. Currently taking pre-orders. I make them in small batches of 6 at a time as this keeps the material costs down. Once the helmets are complete, you will be challenged for the balance of payment plus shipping. These helmets take 3-5 months to produce and require a fair bit of work. Once the order window is closed, production will begin. Total cost of the Helmet and fittings is $475.00 CAD + shipping.
The current order of this helmet will be the Other Ranks version, constructed of pith wood, covered in the dark navy blue melton fabric in the correct 4 panel construction, edge banded with fine black leather and lined with green cotton broad cloth. The helmet has a working ventilator fitted to the top to hold the spike or ball and cruciform base in place. Completing the home service helmet is the leather backed chin chain and hook rosettes. The chin chain can be worn up or down and features two inner hooks that can hold the chain or a leather chin strap (not included) for the helmet. Two sizes are available at 57-59 CM and 60-62 CM. Please go up if you are between sizes. Easier to add padding than to be too small. I will do my best to get a close fit if you order one. Photos show various shades of blue, but it depends on your monitor and lighting in the picture. The color of these is dark navy.
Historical Information
The home service helmet in this color was worn by infantry of the line and corps, royal marines and artillery units (the ball finial was worn by some service corps, artillery and royal marine artillery). It is also currently being worn by Bands of the British Army. Historically, light infantry regiments wore dark green cloth (brass fittings), Rifle regiments wore Deep Brunswick Green Cloth (almost black) with blackened bronze fittings and volunteers and miltia had a wide range of colors and fittings.
These helmets were worn in Garrison for HOME SERVICE, but not in the field for the British Army. In 1885, companies of the Midland Provisional Battalion wore them in action in Northwest Canada, marking the only time they were worn in action in the British Empire.
